The Westland Whirlwind was the first RAF’s twin-engined heavy fighter of the WWII. First flown in 1938, it was one of the fastest combat aircraft in the world. Protracted development problems with its engines delayed the project and only 116 aircraft were built. Despite its success as a fighter and ground attack aircraft, it equipped only three RAF squadrons and was withdrawn from service in 1943.
